Please join us on Saturday November 7 when Avonova presents Ms. Melissa Dinwiddie. Melissa’s show is a fund-raiser for Jazz Camp West and will start at 8 PM. Admission is $12-25 and the doors open at 7:15.
Is this jazz, folk, or comedy? Singer/songwriter, storyteller and performer Melissa Dinwiddie is a winning combination of all three. Interactive music, storytelling and comedy… with a ukulele. Inspired by the absurdities of modern life, Dinwiddie crafts songs evocative of the Great American Songbook but dealing with 21st Century themes. She has an ear for a witty turn of phrase, and her vocal chops and improvisational comic timing delight audiences of all ages. The stories she weaves in among the music make her musical act more of a one-woman show than a concert. Armed with her ukulele and her trusty iPad, and a background in improv theater, Dinwiddie turns her solo act into a one-woman band and choir, even making up songs on the spot based on audience suggestions.
The San Jose Mercury News called Dinwiddie’s 2009 release, Online Dating Blues, “a sassy session featuring sharply observed originals.” Dinwiddie followed up in 2012 with more originals on her next album, My Ukulele (the Naked Sessions). She’s best experienced in person, though, where her skill with an audience really shines.
