RSVP for The Oakland Jazz Choir

Please join us on Sunday May 19 when Avonova presents the Oakland Jazz Choir.  The show starts at 3 PM and the admission is $15 – $20 sliding scale, which includes delicious refreshments.  Doors open at 2:15 PM.  The group is led by Ben Flint, artistic director and has Walter Bankovitch as its pianist, band leader and arranger.  Band members will include Peter Barshay on bass and Julian Hogan on drums.

The Oakland Jazz Choir is a 14-voice jazz ensemble that has been active in the East Bay and beyond for over 20 years.  Specializing in tight harmony, original arrangements and a great backup band, the group puts its unique jazzy touch on music ranging from contemporary, blues, straight ahead jazz and bebop.

In addition to performing in such important venues like Yoshi’s, SF Jazz Festival, the Jazz School and the Great American Music Hall, OJC takes their “What is Jazz” educational program into the Oakland Public School classrooms.  The group also has a 15-year history of performing with the Bread and Roses organization, bringing jazz to those in homeless shelters, rehab centers and prisons. Regardless of who’s listening, the Oakland Jazz Choir delivers a program of challenging and entertaining music.
